Our Spruce Resin Blend

Spruce first. A little pine for elasticity.

Our Canadian Spruce Gum is made primarily from wild-harvested spruce resin. We blend in a small amount of pine resin for added elasticity, helping create the firm, long-lasting chew Alberta Wildcraft is known for.

Ingredients: 100% Tree Pitch

Made For First-Time Chewers

Try the forest chew before going bigger.

Traditional spruce gum is unlike store-bought chewing gum. It starts firm, isn't sweet, and takes a little technique before the tree pitch comes together into a smooth chew.

The sample size is designed for people who simply want to find out: Do I actually like chewing traditional spruce gum?

Traditional Spruce Gum

Gum existed long before modern gum base.

People have chewed natural tree resins for generations. Traditional spruce gum comes from spruce resin rather than the manufactured gum bases used in most modern chewing gum.

Alberta Wildcraft Canadian Spruce Gum is made primarily from wild-harvested spruce resin, creating a firm, evergreen-flavoured chew with no added sweetness.

This is not bubble gum. It's real tree-pitch chewing gum.

What To Expect

The first bite may surprise you.

Natural spruce gum can break into small pieces when you first bite it. That's part of the process.

The first bite may shatter
Warmth gradually softens the tree pitch
Folding helps fragments bind together
Practice makes forming the gum easier
Spruce Gum & Mastic Gum

For people familiar with mastic gum, Canadian spruce gum offers a northern tree-resin chewing tradition with a tough, long-lasting chew. Traditional spruce resin gum is naturally different from commercial chewing gum and may appeal to people looking for a firm natural chew or an alternative to commercial jawline gum.

Sample Tin Questions

Good to know before your first chew.

What is Alberta Wildcraft Spruce Gum made from?
Our Canadian Spruce Gum is made primarily from wild-harvested spruce resin, with a small amount of pine resin blended in for added elasticity. It is 100% tree pitch with no fillers, added sweeteners or synthetic gum base.
Why do you add a small amount of pine resin?
Spruce resin is the primary ingredient in our gum. We blend in a small amount of pine resin for added elasticity and to help create the firm, long-lasting chew we want from our Canadian Spruce Gum.
How is this different from modern chewing gum?
Most modern chewing gum uses a manufactured gum base. Alberta Wildcraft Canadian Spruce Gum is made from 100% tree pitch with no conventional synthetic gum base or added sweeteners.
Does this gum contain synthetic gum base?
No. Alberta Wildcraft Canadian Spruce Gum is made from 100% tree pitch and contains no conventional synthetic gum base.
Is it flavoured or sweetened?
No. There are no added sweeteners or artificial flavours. Expect the natural evergreen, resinous flavour of traditional spruce gum.
Can I chew a piece again later?
Yes. Once you've formed a piece of spruce gum, it can firm again as it cools. Warm it in your mouth later and it can soften back into a chew. The included mini tin gives you a convenient place to keep it between uses.
What if the sample isn't enough for me to learn?
Some first-time chewers prefer more spruce gum while learning the technique. If you want more practice without committing to a full-size tin, our 15 g Starter Size is designed for exactly that.
Has spruce resin been scientifically studied?

Yes. Spruce and pine resins have been examined in ethnobotanical and laboratory research, including research involving white spruce, black spruce and lodgepole pine — the same tree species we harvest for our resin gum.

Research has also examined chewing, saliva flow and the role saliva plays in the oral environment.

We’ve gathered the original studies, traditional-use sources and supporting research in one place — including what the research does and does not establish.

What does research say about conventional chewing gum?

Food-regulatory sources show that some conventional chewing-gum bases can contain synthetic polymer ingredients. A 2025 pilot study presented by the American Chemical Society also detected microplastic particles released into saliva from both synthetic and natural commercial gums tested.

Aspartame is also permitted for use as an artificial sweetener in chewing gum. In 2023, IARC classified aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B), while JECFA reaffirmed its existing acceptable daily intake and Health Canada continues to permit aspartame at approved levels.

Alberta Wildcraft Spruce Gum contains no conventional synthetic gum base, no aspartame and no artificial sweeteners.

Please Note Avoid use if you have a known allergy to pine or related tree resins. Natural spruce gum can be firm and sticky, so use caution with weak or damaged teeth, braces, dentures, crowns, bridges, or other dental work. This product is not intended for people expecting sweet, commercial-style bubble gum.
