Our Spruce Resin Blend

Spruce first. A little pine for elasticity.

Why A Starter Size?

Spruce gum takes a little learning.

Traditional spruce gum is different from store-bought chewing gum. Some people find a tiny sample isn't quite enough to really learn how spruce gum works, while a full tin can feel like a big commitment.

This Starter Size is the middle ground: enough Canadian spruce gum to practice the chew and decide whether it's right for you.

Traditional Spruce Gum

For those familiar with mastic gum, Canadian spruce gum offers a northern tree-resin chewing tradition with a strong, long-lasting chew. Traditional spruce resin gum is naturally different from conventional chewing gum and is also sought out by some people looking for a firmer natural chew or an alternative to commercial jawline gum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before you order.

What is Alberta Wildcraft Spruce Gum made from?
Our Canadian Spruce Gum is made primarily from wild-harvested spruce resin, with a small amount of pine resin blended in for added elasticity. There are no fillers, added sweeteners or synthetic gum base.
Why do you add a small amount of pine resin?
Spruce resin is the primary ingredient in our gum. We blend in a small amount of pine resin for added elasticity and to help create the firm, long-lasting chew we want from our Canadian Spruce Gum.
Who harvests the resin?
We do. Our family personally harvests the spruce resin, along with the small amount of pine resin used in our blend, from Canadian forests and prepares it here in Alberta. We do not use outside resin harvesters.
Is spruce gum sweet?
No. Our Canadian Spruce Gum has no added sweeteners. Its naturally resinous, evergreen flavour comes from the tree resin itself.
Can spruce gum be reused?
Yes. Individual pieces can be chewed intermittently over multiple days. Set your piece aside and return to it later.
Is this like regular chewing gum?
Traditional spruce gum is different from commercial chewing gum. It is firmer, contains no synthetic gum base or added sweeteners, and may initially break into pieces before warming and coming together as you chew.
Has spruce resin been scientifically studied?

Yes. Spruce and pine resins have been examined in ethnobotanical and laboratory research, including research involving white spruce, black spruce and lodgepole pine — the same tree species we harvest for our resin gum.

Research has also examined chewing, saliva flow and the role saliva plays in the oral environment.

We’ve gathered the original studies, traditional-use sources and supporting research in one place — including what the research does and does not establish.

What does research say about conventional chewing gum?

Food-regulatory sources show that some conventional chewing-gum bases can contain synthetic polymer ingredients. A 2025 pilot study presented by the American Chemical Society also detected microplastic particles released into saliva from both synthetic and natural commercial gums tested.

Aspartame is also permitted for use as an artificial sweetener in chewing gum. In 2023, IARC classified aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B), while JECFA reaffirmed its existing acceptable daily intake and Health Canada continues to permit aspartame at approved levels.

Alberta Wildcraft Spruce Gum contains no conventional synthetic gum base, no aspartame and no artificial sweeteners.
