From Wild + Garden

Our mullein leaf is gathered from the wild, while the marshmallow leaf and flowers are harvested from plants grown in our own garden.

The plants are dried and prepared before being brought together as this small-batch loose herbal blend.

Know the Plants

Two Very Different Herbs

Part of what makes this pairing interesting is how different mullein and marshmallow are as plants.

Mullein Leaf

Mullein is easily recognized by its broad, velvety leaves. The surface is covered in extremely fine natural hairs, giving the leaf its distinctive soft texture.

Marshmallow Leaf + Flower

Marshmallow belongs to the mallow family and has a long history as an infusion plant. Its leaves contain naturally occurring mucilage — plant compounds that develop a characteristic slippery texture when exposed to water.

Herbal Tradition

Why Mullein + Marshmallow?

Mullein and marshmallow both have long histories in Western herbal preparations, including traditional preparations associated with the throat and respiratory system. Their different plant characteristics are one reason they make such a natural pairing in traditional herbal blends.

Mullein's Traditional Role

Mullein leaf has historically been prepared as an herbal infusion and has a particularly long association with traditional respiratory herbal preparations.

Marshmallow's Traditional Role

Marshmallow has traditionally been valued as a demulcent herb. Its naturally occurring mucilage is responsible for the distinctive soothing character traditionally associated with marshmallow preparations.

How to Prepare

Make an Herbal Infusion

Add approximately 1–2 teaspoons of the loose blend to 250 mL (1 cup) of hot water.

Steep for approximately 10–15 minutes.

Strain thoroughly before drinking.

Important

Always Strain Mullein Well

Those beautifully soft mullein leaves are covered in tiny natural hairs. A coarse tea strainer may allow some of them through, so mullein infusions should be filtered thoroughly through a fine tea filter, fine mesh or cloth before drinking.
